Judd tweeted that Kentucky\u2019s opponent was \u201cplaying dirty &amp; can kiss my team\u2019s free throw making a\u2014.\u201d In response, basketball fans called Judd a \u201cwhore,\u201d \u201cbitch,\u201d and \u201ccunt\u201d and made threats of physical and sexual violence.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_278\" style=\"width: 1010px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/ap_ncaa_notre_dame_kentucky_basketball_71964490.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-278\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-full wp-image-278\" src=\"http:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/ap_ncaa_notre_dame_kentucky_basketball_71964490.jpg\" alt=\"AP Photo\/David Richard\" width=\"1000\" height=\"705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/ap_ncaa_notre_dame_kentucky_basketball_71964490.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/ap_ncaa_notre_dame_kentucky_basketball_71964490-300x211.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-278\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">AP Photo\/David Richard<\/p><\/div>\n<p>These responses are deeply problematic\u2014not just because of their extremely violent nature, but also because they are used to target women online. Judd asserts that even when people like her uncle make similar points about Kentucky\u2019s gameplay, he does not face threats because of his position as a \u201cmale sports fan.\u201d Judd rightfully points out that the tweets she received represent a \u201cdevastating social norm experienced by millions of girls and women on the Internet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cultural studies scholar <a href=\"http:\/\/emmajane.info\/?page_id=27\">Emma Alice Jane<\/a> calls this gendered e-bile, \u201ca hostile misogynist rhetoric on the Internet\u201d and \u201ca type of discourse marked by graphic threats of sexual violence, explicit <em>ad hominem<\/em> invective and unapologetic misogyny.\u201d Like Judd, Jane points out that gendered e-bile is not unique to people who are particularly famous or controversial. Rather, these kinds of threats are widespread and common\u2014so much so that Jane calls them \u201ca lingua franca in many sectors of the cybersphere.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Wisconsin fans can help make sure that this kind of thing doesn\u2019t happen for women like Ashley Judd. As we all watch Wisconsin play in the NCAA men&#8217;s basketball championship tonight, and as we discuss their play afterwards, we must welcome the voices of women fans. We need to make sure that Badgers don\u2019t call Ashley Judd &#8212; or women like her &#8212; a bitch for daring to talk about basketball.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/10955177.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-280 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/10955177.jpeg\" alt=\"Dekker &amp; Hayes High Five\" width=\"636\" height=\"339\" srcset=\"https:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/10955177.jpeg 636w, https:\/\/rhetoric.commarts.wisc.edu\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/10955177-300x159.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 636px) 100vw, 636px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If anything, this year\u2019s Wisconsin men\u2019s basketball team has taught us that being a Badger means staying loose, having fun, and playing good, clean games. For Badgers, those three things aren\u2019t contradictory\u2014they are what makes Wisconsin a winning team. And they can be what makes Badger basketball fandom the fandom that everyone else wishes they had. We all know our team is better than Duke.
